Refreshing A Classic – Lake Superior Trading Post

Ask anyone who’s visited the North Shore of Minnesota and they’ll likely know of, or have personally visited Lake Superior Trading Post in Grand Marais. The store sits directly on the harbor. As you crest the hill entering town from the south west, Lake Superior Trading Post is one of the first things you see sitting stoic on the harbor. Their sign is as iconic as the store itself and it is the quintessential stop for wherever your adventures may take you.

The Challenge

The catalyst for this project was to reimagine LSTP’s web presence, as their existing website was dated and lacked many of the features that they felt would help serve as an extension to their customers’ in-store experience. They really desired something that felt akin to the physical store itself and provided an opportunity to tell more of their unique story.

Beyond brand experience or UI/UX, the LSTP team was also in the process of replacing their inventory/point-of-sale (POS) system, and wanted a site that would eventually support e-commerce, and was future-ready and compliant with today’s web standards. What was less expected was a secondary opportunity that presented itself as the work started.

The team at >Greater Thought has an affinity for refreshing brands like LSTP. We instantly saw the opportunity to amplify the brand experience by connecting the store to their iconic sign and what visitors saw on the website. After all, if the sign is the beacon – much like a lighthouse – then why wouldn’t we carry that though all aspects of the LSTP experience? The colors and graphic cues were influenced by the North Shore, Lake Superior, and the store’s signature pine interior. In the end, the uniqueness of this place flavored the work all throughout the process.

The Project Goals

The goals of the project were a combination of functional needs that make up many web projects – the need to tell their history and heritage – and to create a web experience that “FEELS” like the store they have so carefully curated. The balance of functional and emotional goals framed up a unique and exciting opportunity for both LSTP and >GT.

  • Make the website an extension of the store
  • Future POS/inventory management
  • Future ecommerce on the site
  • Bring the store categories to the site
  • Showcase their mission and causes as a steward of the north shore
  • Identify their target audience
  • UI/UX
  • Graphic Design
  • Copywriting
  • SEO
  • Web development
  • Brand Redesign/Refresh
  • Social media skins
Building a site that is scalable and future-ready is something that we strive for with every web project. Building out the visual language of a sign is where form meets function.

Iconography

The iconography needed to be easy to understand. We drew inspiration from things we found in the store, like map legends, and from state and national park research. Local signage and conversations with the Cook County Visitor’s Center all aided the work. The team also reflected on our own nostalgia as we ALL had shopped Lake Superior Trading Post in the past, and we even revisited some of our own photos to get into that “North Shore state of mind.”

The end product of the work for LSTP is something we are very proud of. It is a testament to the process we guide our clients through – rooted in research and listening, while being chameleons in what we do so that the end product does not feel like us, but instead feels like our clients. It is a privilege and an honor to be trusted to refresh brands like this, and we cherish the connections that are made.
